When we think of thriving Asian-American communities, the cities that come to mind are New York, and San Francisco where they’re over 30% of the population. Smaller cities like Reno, Nevada don’t usually come to mind, but for two generations the Rosal family has created a flourishing community.

Lynn Lazaro is the founder and managing editor of the student-run newsroom, Vibrant Voices at the University of Nevada, Reno. As a reporter and leader, Lynn’s mission is to change the way BIPOC are represented in everyday reporting. They currently work as a social media assistant for USA TODAY, and previously worked as a freelance reporter.
